Subject: PCMCIA Ethernet Card frustration

Working with a Compaq Armada E500 Laptop. During installation I can
choose FTP or NFS and the system automatcially recognizes my PCMCIA
ethernet card (Linksys EtherFast 10/100) as ne2. Download begins--but
takes forever, so I cancel and just install from CDROM. After
installation, (choosing the GENERIC_LAPTOP kernel) the card is no
longer functioning. `ifconfig -a` does not even list it.
The installation notes mention a problem with the INSTALL kernel not
supporting PCMCIA hardware but not the other way around--the INSTALL
supporting it and it breaking for GENERIC? I try the suggested "hack"
to "just see what happens", but it "Memory fault (core dumped)" gdb.
Listed below is dmesg after a fresh install. You can clearly find
'ne2' when installing, and yet after the first reboot there seem to be
a lot of PCI IRQ and I/O space problems...any ideas?
