Wether it is "c" or "d" depends on the port you are using - it is the
"raw" partition, which is used to access the whole disk (ignoring any
partitions).

The correct way probably always is to use the first (i.e. "a") partition,
but there used to be a bug in some ports that prevented this for some time
(due to a bad partition type in the generated disklabel), maybe the guide
worked around that bug.

You can check the partitions yourself with something like

 disklabel vnd0
