I have borrowed an Ixus II in the past and have no problem reading the
SD card via an external USB MD/SD/MMC/Flash reader which masquerades as
a removable SCSI hard-drive.

I have not attempted to hook up the camera directly, as I couldn't get
this working with my older Canon DX300 and gphoto and so bought the card
reader.

The nice thing about the card reader is that it should work with almost
any camera and behaves like a normal drive - I use rsync to copy my
images off into a spool area for further processing and this process
isn't affected by the camera model at all.

The main drawback is that it's yet another bit of gear to cart about
with your camera ...

Hope that helps,
Malcolm
