Does everything also look good when you mount the CD?

I had something similar, where mounting the vnd, tar tzvf would show me
all the files in the tar file on the image, but after burning it to the
CD, tar tzvf would fail with a similar error, proving it was the burning
to CD stage which was problematic. Reducing the writing speed fixed
things for me (down to x8 :( )
