You would be hard pressed to get 54mb/s out of anywireless.
Some of the "turbo G" cards might, but they stomp on the
spectrum and make neighbors hate you.

I've got an Atheros in a freebsd box and can get *maybe*
20mb/s through it with line of site between the machines.

802.11b will give you around 6mb/s max.
