One thing I've found recently, maybe its just in current though? Is the
-m option to ifconfig:

  ifconfig -m ex0
ex0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
         capabilities=7<IP4CSUM,TCP4CSUM,UDP4CSUM>
         enabled=0<>
         address: 00:06:5b:9f:82:01
         media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX full-duplex)
         status: active
         supported Ethernet media:
                 media 10baseT
                 media 10baseT mediaopt full-duplex
                 media 100baseTX
                 media 100baseTX mediaopt full-duplex
                 media autoselect

Which lists the supported media.
