HP DAT drives are trouble makers. Either get a Sony DAT drive or use another
tape technology.

I've got a Sony SDT 9000 (DDS3) in my server at home which always worked
reliable for me in the past.

BTW: have you considered buying a bunch of external USB 2.0 disks? They
usually cost less than high end tape medias but offer a larger capacity
and better performance. You have of cause to use them for backup purpose
only and disconnect them after putting a backup on them to achieve the
same level of backup service.
