1, system is currently running NetBSD 1.6ZC userland.
2. wipe out /usr/src for the second time.
3. do another cvs checkout
4. ./build.sh -O /usr/obj -T /usr/src/tooldir.NetBSD-1.6ZK-i386 tools
5. cd /usr/src/lib/libvers, build, and install
6. cd usr/src/usr.sbin/kdestroy
7. attempt a build

result:

/usr/src/tooldir.NetBSD-1.6ZK-i386/bin/i386--netbsdelf-gcc -o kdestroy -nostdlib /usr/lib/crt0.o /usr/lib/crti.o /usr/lib/crtbegin.o kdestroy.o -lkafs -lkrb5 -lkrb -lcrypto -lasn1 -lcom_err -L/usr/src/lib/libvers -lvers -lroken -lcrypt -L/usr/lib -L/usr/lib -lgcc -lc -lgcc /usr/lib/crtend.o /usr/lib/crtn.o
