I have installed cups, cupsomatic, cupsomatic-ppd, and what I believe is
the right version of ghostscript, i.e. 'ghostscript-esp-nox11', all
rather effortlessly from pkgsrc. The printer in question is an Okidata
ol410e. This is i386 current 1.6ZI.
I _think_ I set up the printer correctly via http://localhost:631.
Trying to print from emacs, lyx or the command line, it seems necessary
for the printer to print out first a completely blank page before
printing the 'real' page.
(There's also a problem wherein everything printed from auctex seems to
be sent to the printer as A4 size, but that's a story for another day I
guess...)
