Hello everybody,

I am running NetBSD on a small server at home, which looks about like=20
this:
Athlon 700 / 160MB RAM
18 + 80 GB IDE HDD (by IBM, but they work fine)
Realtek 8139-based ethernet card
AVM A1 Fritz!Card (ISA, non-PnP)
Runs NetBSD 1.6.1 with a custom kernel

So far I'm using the machine as an NFS-server, internet-gateway,=20
firewall.=20
Now I would like to add an SQL-database-server. It's not like I really=20
need it, so it won't be too bad if it does not work out. On the other=20
hand, I want to become a professional network-administrator, so I=20
should know a little more about databases.=20
Hence I would like to set up an SQL-server on my NetBSD-machine.

Now I understand setting up an SQL-server on BSD can be quite a pain,=20
since there seems to be a problem with threads. As far as I understand=20
you have to install additional threading libraries in order for SQL to=20
work.

Can anyone give me a hint where to look for more information? Google=20
didn't bring up useful results. ;-(
What I need to know is:
- - Some information on databases in general and SQL specifically
- - Some information on existing servers. Which one do I want? I=20
understand there's basically two large projects, MySQL and PostgreSQL.=20
Is one of these to be preferred to the other one? I don't care for=20
top-performance, since there's only going to one client (my desktop=20
machine).
- - I also need to know how to configure the server, create databases and=
=20
so on. I guess, this is covered by the database's documentation,=20
though...=20
- - Anything else I should know?=20

Thank you very much in advance,

Benjamin
