Back in August, I started a "silly way to waste bits" as a NetBSD user
database. The idea was to record: Number of NetBSD systems, latitude,
longitude, a contact-info field, and what kind of entry is represented.
Additionally, the first date in which the entry went into the database,
and the entry's expiration date (both in YYYYMMDD format) are recorded.

From this, a "markers" file for programs such as xglobe
(...pkgsrc/x11/xglobe) can be automatically generated, or you may want
to look around for nearby users, etc.

The database hasn't exactly taken off, but it hasn't vanished, either.

Recently, some of the entries have started to expire (most are being
renewed) and I've decided to start generating the markers file and
themaps on a cron job.

So far, I only have one entry in Asia. I have none in South America,
Africa, or Antartica. I know that there are some Japanese and Chinese
users, and I think I even turned up a NetBSD Korean mailing list where
omeone referenced my database. (I can't read Korean, but the characters
looked Korean.) I also don't have any Houston-area users other than
myself. )^&

If you're interested, you can see the database (and some pretty pictures)
at:

I'd love to have more entries. (^&

(Note that there is now a "type-of-entry" field, which allows for other
types than just "user". One person has suggested a "developer" type,
which I may add. There's also "beer" and "events". Others may be
added as well.)
