I've got a radeon7500 but iirc I had to upgrade to XFree 4.3.0 to get it
to work properly (NetBSD 1.6.1 comes packaged with 4.2.1, I checked
out xsrc from the NetBSD repository via cvs, and build it with make
install). It works well so far. XFree DRI (hardware 3D OpenGL
rendering) is not supported out of box. There seems to be work underway
to get it implemented on NetBSD aswell, please see
http://people.freebsd.org/~anholt/dri/ (from the guy who has implemented
it on FreeBSD already). GL rendering through the MESA lib (software GL)
works, though, albeit slowly. If you don't want to play games, or other
high-performance OpenGL applications, that will work fine (like, some 3d
modelling application or similar).
