it could also be a termcap vs terminfo / curses vs ncurses issue. my
older NetBSD 1.4.x systems have mutt linked with ncurses, but from
1.6.x, it's linked with the system curses.
the system curses library uses termcap, but ncurses can use either
termcap or terminfo, and the capabilities listed for a given TERM
variable between terminfo and termcap don't always match.
