But 

  cvs -q checkout -rnetbsd-1-6-1 src

doesn't work for me.

It aborts with no message (CVSROOT=anoncvs@anoncvs.netbsd.org:/cvsroot)
or it says "no such tag netbsd-1-6-1"
(CVSROOT=anoncvs@anoncvs.fr.netbsd.org:/pub/NetBSD-CVS)

Did you succeed with -rnetbsd-1-6-1?
