Subject: OT: why are 12" diagonal 1280x1024 laptops so hard to find?

I'm canvassing choices for a replacement for my Dell L400. Its a 12" screen
1024x768 TFT laptop, which I believe Dell bought in from a source which also
sold to Gateway. Very 'square corner' simple design.
I am finding it ludicrously hard to find mainstream vendors who are selling in
this form factor with a 12" screen that can do 1280x1024 native. They all seem
to have 14 or 15" diagonal which does 1400x1200 which very strongly suggests a
12" should be available for 1280x1024. But at 12" its 1024x768. Sony, IBM, Dell.
(and the new Dells, like the D400 and the D600 are about an inch larger all
round, heavier, and frankly not as good value for money)
Is there something about TFT production runs which is driving this size off the
market? Any advice?
cheers
