I used to backup to DAT tape using dump (which is better than tar).

Now I use pax, and backup to CDR.  This requires more volumes, but since I
have so little data it is cheaper, faster, quieter, and more accessible
than DAT.  In addition pax will backup my non-FFS filesystems.
