I have had the same problems on similar hardware. Compaq Proliant 1600 &
1850R running with a Smart Array 2 SE and Smart Array 3200 respectively.

Doing builds in pkgsrc have been a consistent source of failure for me.

I cycled through the 1.6, 1.6.1 releases and a 06/03/2003 build of
current, but I have had the same problems everywhere.
I was beginning to wonder why no one else was seeing this problem. I am
probably going to give 1.5.1 a run as well.
