For some reason, mounting /dev/wd2e didn't work - maybe because I had
booted from a 1.5 CD, or maybe because it saw the disklabel as corrupt
rather than missing? Even if it had, my /var was in a different partition
(I always separate /var to limit the damage from things like excessive
kernel dumps, spammed mailboxes, or quickly growing logfiles). Perhaps I
should rethink that strategy...
