i'd suggest you to run etcupdate -b /tmp prior to postinstall. other
than that, it's pretty much what i am doing here regularly. i always
build distribution sets and custom kernel and proceed with the steps
described above, in more details:
- backup the old kernel and put the new kernel in place
- reboot to single-user mode
- unpack sets except etc.tgz to / with pax -zrpe -f [set].tgz
- unpack etc.tgz into /tmp/tmproot
- run etcupdate -b /tmp/tmproot, regenerate /dev within this process
- run /etc/postinstall check and fix if necessary
- install new bootblock
- reboot into new system
