I just given a used Epson Stylus 440. How do I know if the thing
still works?

I am having a terrible time finding printcap databases (several
thousand
entries like termcap); so, how do I choose/get a printcap for the thing without actually writing one myself?

And lastly, how do I determine if the ink/toner cartridges are 
empty or not? I can't see through them...
