I picked up an Edirol (roland) UA-5 for some Mac recording work
(needed to come from digital sources, it also supports XLR mics).
There are other, cheaper Edirol UA- options, but basically the
same idea.

The UA-5 is for semi-Pro use (or at least ex-Pro
  use). Coax/TOSlink in/out. 2 XLR or 1/4" in,
2 RCA in, 2RCA out, headphone and USB. Failings
are that without a computer attached, it can't
do things like convert RCA or XLR -> TOSlink.
\ Be nice as a little preamp, otherwise. ]

What's nice is that it's a USB connection to the computer into
a fairly solid box that does all the D/A A/D - away from the
noisy computer. I can also run a TOSlink from the computer room
that happens to be direcly below the room with the big stereo.
Fibre means no ground loops or electrical connections between
UPS'd computers and TV with some connection to cable..

It sounds great, it's a little picky about who is started in
which order, but that's not generally a problem.

I haven't used it with NetBSD yet, and actually haven't really
used BSD for sound stuff (it's always been on Suns - 8bit Sound,
fine for phone quality).

The box sounds great, it's done what I needed it for (and has been
great for ripping tapes). Have folks used this with NetBSD?
