net.inet.ip.mtudisc does not change from its original
val of 0

I did notice something interesting with ppp0:

gandalf# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0: flags=8010<POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
        inet6 fe80::202:2aff:feb1:9e87%ppp0 -> :: prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x3
gandalf# sh /etc/ppp/ppp-on
gandalf# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0: flags=8051<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 542
        inet 208.244.242.247 -> 208.244.242.5 netmask 0xffffff00
        inet6 fe80::202:2aff:feb1:9e87%ppp0 -> :: prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x3
gandalf#

WHY IS MTU getting cut from 1500 to 542 when I run the ppp-on script?
Shouldn't it stay at 1500? (Maybe this is just the first time I noticed it
...)
