OK, I see the problem, but I'm not sure how it got there: the link is
broken-- see below:

/usr/pkg/share/x11-links/lib/libXi.so -> /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so

/usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so.6
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so.6.0
should I make a /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so link, and if so, should I link it
to so.6 or so.6.0?
this is a fresh NetBSD 1.6 installation (generic kernel and everything else
except games and X11 development tools). the pkgsrc is current from about a
month ago

This should be in your .buildlink directory too. Or
the x11-links' share/x11-links/lib/libXi.so.

On my system, it is a symlink to /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so.

mozilla-stable depends on pkgtools/x11-links.

Do you have a recent X11 (1.6) install?

Or do you have old pkgsrc?
