OK, I see the problem, but I'm not sure how it got there: the link is 
broken-- see below:

 > ls -l /usr/pkg/share/x11-links/lib/libXi.so
/usr/pkg/share/x11-links/lib/libXi.so -> /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so

 > ls /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so
ls: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so: No such file or directory

 > ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so*
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so.6
/usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so.6.0

should I make a /usr/X11R6/lib/libXi.so link, and if so, should I link it 
to so.6 or so.6.0?

this is a fresh NetBSD 1.6 installation (generic kernel and everything else 
except games and X11 development tools). the pkgsrc is current from about a 
month ago
