You mentioned you were using 1.5.4_ALPHA, but that was already patched.
There is no strcpy line to patch; it was changed to use output_data().

I assume this core file was caused by something else. I may have missed an
earlier email on this subject, but what did a gdb backtrace of it show?

Also, what does "ident /usr/libexec/telnetd" show?
