Does anyone know which ports cvs uses? Or is 2401 the only one?
I'll probably have to go to the company IT guys and make a request. Ditto
for my ISP.

Your guess is probably right. I just tried both commands and everything
$ telnet anoncvs.netbsd.org 2401
Connected to anoncvs.netbsd.org.

$ cvs -d :pserver:firstname.lastname@example.org:/cvsroot update -dP
