etcupdate has nothing to do with pkgsrc at all (except the fact it's in
pkgsrc as a package).
this particular problem was caused by jdolecek here:
revision 1.62
date: 2002/08/04 17:03:58; author: jdolecek; state: Exp; lines: +2 -2
fix \ botch - need double \ to get the the \ properly generated
in wrapper script
and fixed here:
revision 1.63
date: 2002/08/05 08:09:01; author: lukem; state: Exp; lines: +2 -2
revert previous as it is borken. per testing by me and discussion with
jaromir.
(/brickage to certain vi clones with syntax editing...)

you happen to have rev. 1.62 and thus your bsd.buildlink.mk is broken
and you see these errors. get newer revision of this file and you will
be fine.
