From memory, I got some message about "skipping to the next archive"
or somesuch. I don't remember the last file it extracted, but it
was something in the /usr/src/sys/dev directory. This happened on
two separate ftps of the file from a NetBSD client, so it shouldn't
have been possible for me to forget to put it in binary mode.
Unfortunately, I deleted the file and no longer have it for reference.
I have subsequently upgraded my system to 1.5.3. I just tried to
download syssrc.tgz again and this time it untars with no errors.
I'm reluctant to downgrade my system back to 1.5.2 to try to
reproduce the problem again -- clearly it was at my end given the
behavior.
