I just use "make update" which does *everything* I normally want (though
sometimes, admittedly, more than I want when it tears down old packages
for new libraries that have to be updated).  It:

 * Updates obsolete dependancies.
 * Temporarily removes packages depending on the present package.
 * Builds the new package.
 * Updates anything that it deleted above.
 * Cleans the work directories.

The only downside is the first and second activities can sometimes lead to
a chain reaction causing your system to rebuild a lot if a crucial library
gets updated.
