well, i always use TERM=3Dscreen because i tend to login from/to various
OSes and this is the one which works in colors for me with every
application i use (mutt, vim, slrn, irssi, silc, etc.) without any
problems.

you may try TERM=3Dansi, xterm-color, color_xterm or rxvt
