A 1-screen (less than 24x80) help-file on ed can contain all that you
*really* need to know in order to survive in ed.  It's actually a very
easy editor to use, if you just need something for your survival kit.  (It
saved me when I was first installing NetBSD...fortunately, I knew ed from
elsewhere and made use of it.)

It may help that I have a backgound with dial-up bulletin boards where
most editors (at least when I started) were line-editors, conceptually
similar to ed although rather more limited.  (^&
