So the other day I was testing something or another and decided to boot
the little 486sx laptop I have. It's got a 1.5T kernel on it (2001/03/24?)
It's not ever been configured to go multi-user, but I manually run
dhclient on it. This time for fun I also started rwhod. About a day
later I realised the disk was spinning up quite regularly and probably
shortening its lifetime, so I killed rwhod. Oddly the disk still spins
up occasionally (though only after much larger intervals).
It turns out it's just dhclient (re-) writing (to) /var/db/dhclient.leases.
I'm wondering if other people who've reported unwanted, and at the time
un-explained, disk spin ups might have had dhclient running.....
