basically it is no problem to provide a "nice desktop". To my 
experience these desktops (KDE, Gnome) need lots of ressources 
and are not too stable. Many users do not understand that a 
desktop is not the OS, I know of some users that keep saying 
"linux is not stable" because KDE (or better the version they 
tested) crashed.

And then, who *uses* a desktop? Most or at least a large 
number of users have an OS/Desktop as an application loader. 

What I liked was a common, standardized configuration file for 
*all* window managers/desktops.
