it's the device for the old BSD4.4 DEC driver, which I don't think
exists on any platforms other than pmax.  :)

as for writing the same bit over and over again, maybe the drive is
performing compression?  I think you can turn it off with
"mt -f /dev/nrst0 compress 0."
