STR I had similar problems on Linux (last used that about 2 years ago,
gdm didn't work properly then either), and it turned out that GDM
was using some of the scripts installed by xdm, including one that
set the background.
A fatal mistake for gdm in my case - I uninstalled it and used xdm instead :)

GDM has been version 0.01 since version 1.X, in my experience....
