OK, now you've got me all excited. :-) Seriously, I usually try to
fix a problem before I report it, but KDE is so huge that in this case
the learning curve is insurmountable in the time I have to play with
it. :-( Will you post a patch?

Hmm, OK, then it's not my installation. This one's less serious; I was
trying that CD player because it came with KDE anyway, but I should be
able to find and install another one. On the other hand, if anyone out
there can shed some light... I did try using "lsof" on the process to
figure out which device it was writing to, but was unenlightened.

Interesting. I don't see myself upgrading the O/S again just yet (I
just came up to 1.5.2 from 1.4.1 last month!). What do you mean by
"toolchain"? Is the difference something I can patch in to 1.5.2? Is
there *supposed* to be a "kdeprintd" daemon running? I would have
hoped that when I selected "print through external program", all fancy
stuff would be bypassed...

I very much appreciate your efforts. I've been successfully running
a slightly older konqueror over an ssh-encrypted link across my home
network; the other machine runs Slackware. I'm trying to set up my own
browser so I don't trash the performance of the other machine when its
owner is trying to use it. :-) I agree that konqueror seems quite
satisfactory for the most part; if ssl and printing can be repaired,
I'll be quite pleased.
If there's something I can help with, I'll be happy to try; right now,
I just have no idea where to even start looking.
Anne.
