Do you have any core dumps to look at?
If you can repeat it, maybe use gdb or ktrace for X and/or the X client.
(My blackbox crashes about once a month; my xinitrc file doesn't "exec"
my window manager, but runs an rxvt as the next client so I can restart a
window manager and continue my work. It usually crashes with a sig11 --
which many people think is a memory/hardware problem -- when I close Ted.)
