I believe LILO just puts some bootstrap code in the MBR and stores a list
of disk blocks to load in order to get all the lilo code (typically the
blocks of /boot/boot.b which is almost 6Kb on the RedHat machine I'm
looking at). Sure 6Kb is still small, but no where near small enough to
fit in the MBR.
