nmh 1.0.4 (and exmh 2.5) work relatively well with the NetBSD-1.5 shipped
postfix, at least no such problems as you describe, but then again,
nmh did use smtp and not invoke the sendmail command.  I was using exactly
that combination for several months without any problems (apart from the
nmh commands coredumping once too often, and exmh leaving zombies).

Are you sure postfix' smtpd is always running, and things are properly
set up in /etc/mailer.conf?
