Subject: SCSI tape drives and changers

We're currently considering moving to a new backup method for our Un*x
systems. Though I know that any standard SCSI tape drive or changer
_should_ work fine with NetBSD and amanda, I'm wondering if anybody
has any recommendations as to drives they've found to work well...

We've moved to DLT's for most of our current backups, and will
probably be focusing on those. However, does anyone have any
experience with the new LTO drives that have been showing up recently?
Is the speed difference anywhere near as the spec sheets seem to
indicate? Is it worth the price difference?

Also, are there any specific brands or models which should be avoided,
either for poor performance, frequent breakdowns, or sheer stupidity
(things like requiring a Windows program to run a cleaning pass...)

(We're currently backing up our NetBSD boxes to a system running
Legato Networker on Digital Unix^W^WCompaq^WHP Tru64, and though the
MJFeral NetBSD client has worked fine (with the compat14 package
installed), the server itself has been a constant source of
troubles... we'd really like to just let that system back itself up,
which it seems to do okay at, and give the NetBSD boxes their own
backup system.)

Thanks in advance.
