Ah...I missed the closed PR's. 

Do I understand correctly, then, that this is something that falls to
the upstream authors to straighten out on a package by package basis,
and that until then we have make our way through it by hook and/or
crook, so to speak?

I don't mean to be obtuse or difficult; I'm not sure I understood what
the PR's were saying as to resolution or workaround.
