mmm...point-to-point interfaces.  yeah.

fwiw, i'd consider it a bug that this works (or doesn't) the way it
does.  solaris (as a coarse example) doesn't have this requirement,
but then again, you can't snoop on the loopback interface there, which
also sucks.
