Boy do I feel stupid now...

Here is what happened:
Somehow I mv'ed /usr/bin/make to /usr/bin/old-make and replaced /usr/bin/make
with gmake (for whatever odd reason, I remember I was trying out some stuff),
and forgot to move it back to the old make.  Everything works now.
