what about implementing "no checksumming support"?

for example when communicating through ethernet on LAN it could work
excellent without checksums.

wouldn't an option "don't check&calculate sums" set per-interface a good
idea, while still maintaining checksums on LANs where are other OS'es or
on non-ethernet links?
