I'm building 4.0.3 right now on a i386 1.5.1 system. I'm using the
sources from:

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/tar_files/xsrc/

I found that I had to: setenv USE_XF86_4

The freetype2 directory does exist in:

/usr/src/xsrc/xfree/xc/lib

At this point in the build it has already built libfreetype.a and
libfreetype.so.6.0
