Hmm...  The two other font files listed in my X config file that fail 
to initialize are also missing fonts.alias.  And I was able to add the 
Cyrillic font, which does have one.   But -- CID (whatever that is) 
doesn't have one, and it's loaded.  None of my font directories have 
such a simple fonts.alias file; creating that one didn't help.  But 
this is certainly a path worth investigating.  Tnx.
