IIRC the article describing the exchange of 70 NT servers to one 
Sun E10K they had to keep about 5 NT servers for that 
functionality. As this was done at a R&D lab of Siemens I expect 
they really tried everything.

As for an alternative I think I had read about Notes with such 
functionality, but am not shure.
