What is DivX? Or what can I use this DivX movie player for? (Where do I

I am trying to figure out what DivX is. 
I found one webpage at http://www.divx-digest.com/help.html ("What is
DivX?"). I was guessing that DivX was for playing DVD's, but now from
reading I think I am wrong. (I have a "TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1202" and a
DVD movie that I was hoping that I can watch.)
