I use fetchmail and exmh.  Fetchmail can poll multiple mail servers, 
using a variety of different protocols.  You have a variety of options 
for delivery.  The default is to send the mail to your local mail 
server, so a local pop client can pick it all up.  I send mine to a 
long procmail script that invokes rcvstore (part of mh and nmh) to the 
appropriate folder; exmh then tells me which folders have new mail.
