One thing I should probably add to this discussion:

In our development at N*k*a, we found that there was a bug in the text
mode virtualization that caused the VGA driver text scrolling
optimizations to really screw up the display with MediaGX chips.  We
should probably introduce a hack to disable it on those machines.
