Here at rmkhome.com I'm runnig 8.2.3 on SunOS 4.1.4 ( soon to be
upgraded to NetBSD 1.5 :)
Here is what I get:
rmkhome# dig @127.0.0.1 version.bind text chaos
; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> @127.0.0.1 version.bind text chaos
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch

From /var/adm/messages:
rmkhome# grep "8.2.3-REL" /var/adm/messages
Jan 27 20:25:49 rmkhome named[29156]: starting (/etc/named.conf). named 8.2.3-REL Sat Jan 27 19:42:57 MST 2001
Looks like it refuses to return version queries, by default.
